Yes - we coordinate non-fault car and van accident management across all N14 postcode areas within Southgate, part of the London Borough of Enfield. Services include 24/7 recovery to a CCTV-monitored partner yard, secure storage, repair coordination and like-for-like replacement vehicle screening. We file CCTV disclosure with the relevant highway authority inside the typical 14 to 31-day footage retention window, and we coordinate with the Metropolitan Police for collision reporting under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Coverage detail
Southgate is the N14 postcode district, the district Royal Mail actually names after the town. N14 runs north to Oakwood, west to the Barnet boundary along Chase Side, east towards Winchmore Hill Road and south towards Arnos Grove, taking in Southgate Circus, Southgate Green, the High Street, The Green, Chase Road, Cannon Hill and the residential grid either side. The neighbouring districts matter when you are pinning down exactly where a collision happened, because the postcode boundaries do not follow the way people describe the area in conversation: Winchmore Hill is N21, Palmers Green is N13, Cockfosters is EN4, and New Southgate with the Arnos Grove stretch of the North Circular sits in N11. For an accident management file the precise incident postcode decides which council control room holds any camera footage, which enforcement and permit records apply, and which recovery route makes sense, so it is worth nailing down at first notification rather than a fortnight later.
Southgate sits in the north west of the London Borough of Enfield, roughly eight miles north of Charing Cross, and takes its name from the south gate of Enfield Chase, the old royal hunting ground. The modern town was shaped by the Piccadilly line extension of 1933, and its centre is still defined by that moment: Charles Holden's circular, Grade II* listed station drum stands in the middle of Southgate Circus with a curved bus station wrapped around it and shop parades facing in. Before the Circus was built the junction was known as Five Ways Corner, and those five arms survive today as Chase Side, Chase Road, Winchmore Hill Road, The Bourne and the High Street. Around that hub lies a largely interwar suburb of wide avenues, closes and long parades, bounded by Oakwood and Cockfosters to the north, Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green to the east, Arnos Grove and New Southgate to the south, and the London Borough of Barnet boundary to the west along Chase Side.
The road environment is a patchwork of authorities, and that patchwork decides who holds the records after a collision. The classified roads through the town itself are Enfield Council's responsibility: the A111 Chase Side running north from the Circus to Oakwood and Cockfosters, the A1004 along Southgate High Street, The Green and Cannon Hill down to Aldermans Hill at Palmers Green, the A1003 Waterfall Road heading south west to New Southgate, and the A110 Bramley Road and Cat Hill at Oakwood. So are the unclassified streets that carry most of the local traffic, including Winchmore Hill Road, Chase Road, The Bourne and Crown Lane. The strategic roads are not Enfield's: the A406 North Circular at Arnos Grove and Bowes Road, and the A10 Great Cambridge Road to the east, are part of the Transport for London Road Network and are red routes, while the nearest motorway junctions, M25 junction 24 at Potters Bar and junction 25 at Waltham Cross, are National Highways. Every car and van in the area has been inside the expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone since 29 August 2023, which now covers all London boroughs including Enfield.
What shapes non-fault claims here is the mix of low speed town centre contact and much faster suburban and trunk road driving within a couple of miles of each other. Around the Circus, the High Street and the supermarket access roads you get shunts in slow queues, sideswipes from lane changes, door openings from kerbside parking and reversing impacts in car parks: modest speeds, but modern sensors, cameras, headlamps and bumper assemblies mean repair bills that no longer match the look of the damage. Push out to the A111, the A110 or the A406 and the same drivers meet junction turns across traffic, merges and rear end impacts at speed. Southgate is also a base for a lot of private hire and PCO work, with drivers running airport and cross London jobs from N14 and the surrounding districts, and for tradespeople running vans, so a written off or immobilised vehicle is very often a stopped income rather than an inconvenience. CityGrip handles the accident management side for non-fault car and van drivers: recovery, secure storage, a like for like replacement vehicle on credit hire, repair coordination, independent engineer inspection and correspondence with the third party insurer. We do not deal with personal injury in house. Where someone has been hurt, the injury element is referred to an authorised legal partner, and only with the customer's separate written consent.
Southgate Circus is the pressure point. Five arms feed into a compact roundabout wrapped around a listed station building and an integrated bus station, with a large supermarket, bank parades and takeaways generating constant short stay parking, deliveries and pedestrian movement. Buses from routes serving Enfield, Cockfosters, Potters Bar, Edmonton and Mill Hill East pull in and out across the circulating carriageway, which is where a lot of the contact happens: drivers who commit to the wrong lane on the approach and correct late, drivers who stop for a pedestrian crossing and are shunted from behind, and drivers emerging from the shop frontages and side accesses into a gap that closes faster than expected. Loading on the High Street and Ashfield Parade narrows the running lane at exactly the times the parade is busiest, and the mixture of angled kerbside parking and a steady stream of people crossing between the station, the bus stands and the shops keeps speeds low but the contact frequency high. Liability disputes at the Circus tend to turn on lane position and priority on the roundabout, which is precisely the kind of argument that resolves quickly if footage is secured before it is overwritten.
North of the Circus, the A111 Chase Side climbs towards Oakwood and Cockfosters and changes character several times over a short distance, from town centre frontage with parking on both sides, to residential with mature street trees and frequent side road junctions, to a faster suburban stretch near Chase Side's boundary with the London Borough of Barnet. The recurring patterns are vehicles emerging from side roads into a sight line blocked by parked cars, opposing right turns into driveways and side streets, and rear end shunts where the through traffic is stop start behind a bus. At the northern end, the staggered set of junctions where Chase Side meets Bramley Road (A110), Cat Hill and Cockfosters Road at Oakwood is a genuine hotspot, with Oakwood station and its commuter parking, Trent Park visitor traffic at weekends and school peaks from the large secondaries in the area, including Ashmole Academy on Cecil Road, all loading the same junctions within the same half hour windows. Chase Road, running south west from the Circus towards Oakwood station and the residential streets behind it, adds a further stream of school run and station drop off movements.
Heading south and east the risks change again. The A1004 through Southgate Green and down Cannon Hill towards Aldermans Hill is narrow in places, with a conservation area frontage, sports ground access and parked cars on both sides, so overtaking a stationary vehicle brings drivers into the path of oncoming traffic. The A1003 Waterfall Road drops south west to New Southgate and feeds into the A406 North Circular around Arnos Grove and Betstyle, where the speed differential between local traffic joining and through traffic already moving is the classic trigger for merge and lane change collisions, all of it on a TfL red route with restrictions that make stopping after an incident difficult. Between Southgate and Palmers Green, the Fox Lane quieter neighbourhood uses modal filters and enforcement cameras to close a number of streets to through traffic, and council monitoring after the trial recorded a large fall in traffic inside the zone with small increases on the boundary roads, including Southgate High Street. In practice that means more turning, doubling back and unfamiliar routing at the edges of the zone. Further east, the A105 Green Lanes corridor towards Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill was rebuilt with segregated cycle tracks under Enfield's cycling programme, so left turns and side road crossings there involve a protected lane that drivers new to the area do not always read correctly. Event days at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Alexandra Palace, both within a few miles to the south east and south, push additional traffic onto the A10, the A406 and the A105, and Enfield operates an event day controlled parking zone around the stadium, which displaces parking searches outwards on those days.
SOUTHGATE
Section 3 of the walkthrough.
Evidence in Southgate comes from several different owners, and each has its own clock. Enfield Council runs the borough's camera network from the Enfield Public Safety Centre, and the council's published position is that recorded images are held for 31 days unless an incident has been flagged, after which footage may be retained as evidence. If you have been involved in a collision on a borough road such as Chase Side, the High Street, The Green, Waterfall Road, Winchmore Hill Road or Chase Road, the request should go to the council's CCTV team, normally through your insurer or appointed representative, and you should expect to prove identity, address and ownership of the vehicle before any still or copy is released. Where a criminal offence is involved, the council will deal with the police rather than release footage directly, so a crime reference number is needed first. Cameras on the A406 North Circular and the A10 Great Cambridge Road belong to Transport for London rather than Enfield, and a great many TfL traffic cameras are live monitoring rather than recorded, so the realistic sources there are bus on board CCTV, which is held for a short period, and any third party dashcam. Private cameras on the parades at Southgate Circus, Ashfield Parade, the supermarket and the fuel forecourts are usually the most useful of all, but small business systems commonly overwrite in 14 to 31 days, and some in a week. CityGrip's practice is to identify and chase every camera owner in the first few days rather than after liability is denied, because by then the footage is normally gone. On the police side, Enfield falls within the Metropolitan Police North Area Basic Command Unit, which covers Enfield and Haringey. Drivers must stop and exchange details at the scene, and if details were not exchanged the collision must be reported to the police as soon as reasonably practicable and in any event within 24 hours.
The logistics side is shaped by the fact that Southgate has very little room to leave a damaged vehicle. Southgate Circus, the High Street and the shopping parades have no space to stand a car safely, the A406 is a red route where a stopped vehicle has to be cleared quickly, and much of the surrounding residential grid sits within permit controlled parking. CityGrip arranges recovery from the scene or from wherever the vehicle has ended up, including police recovery pounds, moves it into secure storage rather than leaving it in a controlled bay accruing penalties, and documents its condition on collection so that pre existing damage never becomes an argument later. Alongside that we arrange a like for like replacement vehicle so a non-fault driver is not off the road: a comparable car or van, ULEZ compliant so it can be used across every London borough, and where the driver holds a current private hire driver and vehicle licence with hire and reward cover, a vehicle suitable for continuing licensed private hire work. We do not provide hackney carriage or black cab vehicles, and we do not act for HGV, lorry, bus or coach operators. From there we coordinate the repair with an approved repairer, instruct an independent engineer where the damage or a total loss valuation needs supporting, and handle the correspondence with the third party insurer so the driver is not negotiating with the other side's claims handler. If anyone in the vehicle was injured, we explain the position and, only with separate written consent, refer that part to an authorised legal partner who deals with injury.
The road authority for each route is identified so the right disclosure request (borough council, Transport for London, the City of London Corporation or National Highways) can be filed inside the typical 14 to 31-day CCTV retention window.
| Reference | Road / corridor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A111 | Chase Side | Runs north from Southgate Circus through the town centre to Oakwood and on towards Cockfosters, and forms part of the borough boundary with Barnet along its western side. Maintained by Enfield Council, now 20mph through the town centre section, with kerbside parking, frequent side road junctions and buses stopping in lane. The most common patterns are side road emerges into a sight line blocked by parked cars, opposing right turns and shunts in stop start queues. |
| A1004 | Southgate High Street, The Green and Cannon Hill | The main north to south corridor from Southgate Circus through Southgate Green and down Cannon Hill to Aldermans Hill in Palmers Green. Borough maintained and largely 20mph in the town centre section. Narrow in places with a conservation area frontage, sports ground access and parking on both sides, so vehicles pulling out around a stopped car meet oncoming traffic. Council monitoring after the Fox Lane scheme recorded small traffic increases on this boundary corridor. |
| A1003 | Waterfall Road | Links The Green at Southgate south west towards New Southgate, Betstyle and the A406. A busy local distributor with schools, shops and residential frontage, and the natural route for Southgate drivers heading for the North Circular, so it carries traffic accelerating towards or decelerating from a much faster road. Junction and turning collisions cluster where side roads meet it and where drivers queue back from the A406 approaches. |
| A110 | Bramley Road and Cat Hill | Meets Chase Side and Cockfosters Road in the staggered junction complex at Oakwood, next to Oakwood station and its commuter parking. Traffic here mixes station drop offs, school peaks, Trent Park visitor traffic at weekends and through movements between Enfield, Cockfosters and Barnet. Sight lines and the staggered layout make right turning and gap acceptance the recurring liability question. |
| A406 | North Circular Road (Bowes Road, Arnos Grove and New Southgate) | About a mile and a half south of Southgate Circus and the nearest strategic route, reached via Waterfall Road or Bowes Road. This is a Transport for London red route, so it is TfL and not Enfield Council that manages the carriageway, the signing and the enforcement. Speed differential at merges, lane changes and queue tails behind junction lights drive the collision pattern, and red route restrictions mean a damaged vehicle has to be recovered quickly rather than left at the kerb. |
Within ULEZ. Any replacement vehicle we arrange for you in Southgate will be ULEZ-compliant so you can continue travelling in and through the zone without penalty.
Southgate town centre became 20mph in March 2026, when Enfield Council introduced new limits in the Southgate, Palmers Green and Edmonton town centres. In Southgate the 20mph area runs from the Cannon Hill and Aldermans Hill junction northwards along Cannon Hill, The Green and Southgate High Street, and takes in Chase Side, part of Chase Road, Crown Lane, Ashfield Parade and the side streets between them. This is a town centre scheme rather than a borough wide 20mph limit: an earlier proposal to cover most of Enfield was scaled back after consultation raised concerns, so residential and distributor roads outside the three town centres generally remain 30mph unless signed otherwise, and the streets inside the Fox Lane quieter neighbourhood between Southgate and Palmers Green are calmed and camera enforced separately. Higher signed limits apply on the A406 North Circular, which is a Transport for London red route with its own signing, so check the repeaters rather than assuming. Where a 20mph limit applies it is the legal limit, and approach speed is one of the first things a third party insurer will probe if liability is disputed.
CCTV, signal data and bus footage from a Southgate collision are subject to retention windows that typically run between 14 and 31 days. After that the footage is overwritten and unavailable. The first 72 hours are disproportionately important.
24/7 dispatch to a CCTV-monitored partner yard.
