Coverage detail
Shepherd's Bush is the heart of the W12 postcode district, which also takes in White City, Wormholt and the Askew Road area, and which sits entirely within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. In practice the district splits into recognisable pockets: W12 0 around Du Cane Road, Hammersmith Hospital and Wormwood Scrubs; W12 7 covering White City, Wood Lane, the Westfield and Television Centre area and the streets around Loftus Road; W12 8 around Shepherd's Bush Green, the Uxbridge Road shops and Shepherd's Bush Market; and W12 9 to the west around Askew Road and the streets off Goldhawk Road. The district borders W3 Acton to the west, NW10 Old Oak and Harlesden to the north, W11 Notting Hill and W14 West Kensington to the east across the West Cross Route, and W6 Hammersmith and Brook Green to the south. When you report a collision to us, quoting the full postcode plus the nearest named junction saves a great deal of time, because several W12 streets share names or near-identical names with roads in the neighbouring districts, and a recovery truck sent to the wrong end of Goldhawk Road or Wood Lane costs you an hour you do not have.
Shepherd's Bush sits in the north east of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, roughly five miles west of Charing Cross, and takes its name and its shape from the eight-acre triangular green at its centre. Almost everything about the way traffic behaves here radiates out from that triangle. Shepherd's Bush Green is ringed by roads on all three sides, fed from the east by the Holland Park Roundabout, from the west by Uxbridge Road and Goldhawk Road, and from the north by Wood Lane. Six stations sit within a few hundred metres of each other: Shepherd's Bush and White City on the Central line, Shepherd's Bush Market, Goldhawk Road and Wood Lane on the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines, and Shepherd's Bush Overground on the West London Line. Eighteen bus routes serve the Green and the nearby White City bus station. The result is a compact town centre carrying an unusually heavy mix of buses, black cabs, private hire cars, courier vans, cyclists and pedestrians crossing between stations, all packed into a very short length of kerb.
North of the Green, White City has changed almost beyond recognition in the past two decades. Westfield London opened in 2008 and was extended in 2018, and it pulls a constant stream of car journeys into three car parks holding more than 4,000 spaces between them, reached either from the West Cross Route and the Holland Park Roundabout or from Wood Lane and Ariel Way. Around it sit the former BBC Television Centre, White City Place, Imperial College London's White City campus and the White City Estate, while Loftus Road, home to Queens Park Rangers and holding 18,439, tucks into the residential grid off South Africa Road. Further north again, Du Cane Road runs past Hammersmith Hospital and Wormwood Scrubs towards Old Oak Common, where the HS2 station works have kept Old Oak Common Lane and Scrubs Lane under long-running traffic management. West of the Green, Uxbridge Road, Goldhawk Road and Askew Road are traditional narrow high streets, parked on both sides, with loading bays, market stalls and shopfronts opening straight onto the pavement.
What shapes non-fault claims in W12 is the collision of two completely different road types within a few hundred metres of each other. The elevated A40 Westway and the A3220 West Cross Route were built as fast, grade-separated urban motorway (the West Cross Route was signed as the M41 until 2000), and traffic leaving them drops almost immediately onto 20mph borough streets full of buses, cycles and people crossing. Add the very high proportion of working vehicles in the area, private hire drivers picking up outside Westfield and the Green, couriers, and small van fleets serving the shops and estates, and the typical Shepherd's Bush non-fault claim is not simply about repairing a car. It is about keeping someone earning while it is repaired. CityGrip Accident Claims handles that side of it for car and van drivers: recovery from the scene, secure storage, independent engineer inspection, a like-for-like replacement vehicle, repair coordination and all the correspondence with the third-party insurer, so the person who was not at fault is not left funding somebody else's mistake out of their own pocket. We do not handle personal injury in house. If you have been hurt, your enquiry is referred to authorised legal partners, and only with your separate written consent.
The A40 Westway is the dominant piece of infrastructure in the area. It runs east to west on concrete piers above White City, it is managed by Transport for London as part of the TfL Road Network rather than by the council, and it is enforced in places by average speed cameras. Eastbound traffic building back from the White City and Wood Lane exit through the morning peak is a long-standing feature, and the shunts that follow are the classic Westway claim: crawling or stationary traffic, a driver reading the queue ahead rather than the vehicle immediately in front, and rear-end damage at low speed but with high recovery difficulty because there is nowhere convenient to move a damaged car on a viaduct. At its western end the Westway meets the A3220 West Cross Route at an elevated roundabout, and the West Cross Route then runs the short distance south to the Holland Park Roundabout. That roundabout is a recognised problem location and is included in the Mayor's Safer Junctions programme: Transport for London's own consultation material for its redesign recorded 54 collisions in the three years to May 2023, in which 59 people were hurt, including 14 people walking or cycling, six of them seriously. The West Cross Route is also the administrative boundary between Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea, which matters far more than drivers expect once evidence has to be chased.
Closer in, the pattern changes completely. The roads ringing Shepherd's Bush Green, along with Uxbridge Road (A4020), Goldhawk Road (A402), Shepherd's Bush Road (A219) and Wood Lane, are borough roads subject to the 20mph limit, and the recurring collisions there are low speed but high dispute. Buses pulling out of stops on the Green and along Uxbridge Road, cars turning across a bus lane, cyclists filtering on the nearside, pedestrians crossing between the stations and the Green, and vehicles emerging from the many short side turnings all combine to produce sideswipes, turning collisions and cycle and pedestrian conflicts rather than high-speed impacts. Transport for London's published case for the Cycleway 34 section between Wood Lane and Shepherd's Bush Green, a stretch of roughly 1.7km, recorded 125 collisions in the 36 months to September 2021, of which 51 (40.8 per cent) involved someone cycling or walking, including one fatality, 13 serious injuries and 37 slight injuries. The stretch of Uxbridge Road and Goldhawk Road at Shepherd's Bush Market brings its own problems: loading and unloading throughout the day, double parking, vehicle doors opening straight into the traffic lane, and pedestrians stepping out from between stationary vehicles where sightlines are almost nil.
The third pattern is car park and event traffic, and it produces a surprising share of the disputed claims we see in W12. Westfield London's car parks A, B and C generate constant low-speed manoeuvring, reversing out of bays, ramp and aisle conflicts and queueing back onto the approach roads at Ariel Way and Wood Lane, particularly at weekends and through the run-up to Christmas. These are the collisions where liability is argued hardest and where private CCTV, rather than council or TfL cameras, decides the outcome. On QPR matchdays, South Africa Road past Loftus Road is closed by police from around 90 minutes before kick-off and again near the final whistle, pushing displaced traffic into Bloemfontein Road, Ellerslie Road and the White City Estate streets, where drivers unfamiliar with the layout meet residents reversing off driveways. To the north, Scrubs Lane, Du Cane Road and Old Oak Common Lane carry heavy construction traffic tied to the HS2 works at Old Oak Common, with lane restrictions and weekend closures that regularly route lorries and vans through W12 residential streets that were never built for them.
SHEPHERD'S BUSH
Section 3 of the walkthrough.
Getting the evidence in Shepherd's Bush means asking the right body first time, because the road you were on decides who holds the footage. If your collision happened on the A40 Westway, on the A3220 West Cross Route or at the Holland Park Roundabout, those are TfL Road Network roads and any traffic or enforcement camera footage sits with Transport for London. If it happened on Uxbridge Road, Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush Green, Wood Lane, Askew Road, South Africa Road or any residential street in W12, the highway authority is the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and its town centre and enforcement cameras are the place to start. Cross to the eastern side of the West Cross Route and you are in Kensington and Chelsea, so a collision on the Holland Park Avenue approach can need a request to a different council entirely. Inside Westfield London, its car parks and service yards, and across White City Place and the surrounding retail estates, the cameras are privately operated and the operator has to be approached directly. Timing is unforgiving: local authority and private CCTV is typically overwritten on a rolling cycle of about 14 to 31 days, and Hammersmith and Fulham states that its CCTV is held for 31 days and then deleted unless it is needed for an investigation. Councils also generally release collision footage only to the police, a solicitor or an insurer rather than to the driver, so the request has to be made properly, by the right party, and within days. Shepherd's Bush is policed by the Metropolitan Police's Central West Basic Command Unit, covering Hammersmith and Fulham alongside Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster, and where details were not exchanged at the scene the collision must be reported to police as soon as reasonably practicable and in any event within 24 hours under section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Keep that reference number safe: it is what keeps a claim alive if the other driver turns out to be uninsured or leaves the scene.
The practical side of the job is shaped by the local geography. Recovering a damaged car or van from the elevated Westway or the West Cross Route is nothing like recovering one from Askew Road: there is no usable verge, stopping is genuinely dangerous, and clearance normally has to be coordinated with police and TfL so the vehicle can be lifted without a running lane being blocked longer than necessary. On the borough side, the terraced streets around Wormholt, Askew, the White City Estate and the roads off Goldhawk Road are narrow, heavily parked and almost entirely inside controlled parking zones, so a damaged vehicle left at the kerb starts attracting penalty charge notices within days and can be a real obstruction to neighbours and to refuse and emergency access. Moving it promptly into secure storage protects both the vehicle and the claim, and it keeps the independent engineer's inspection clean so the third-party insurer has less room to argue about the extent of the damage or to suggest it was made worse afterwards. From there CityGrip coordinates the repair with an approved repairer, arranges a like-for-like replacement car or van on credit hire so a private hire driver, courier or trades business is not simply parked up losing income, and handles the correspondence with the at-fault insurer on your behalf. Because the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered every London borough since 29 August 2023, and Shepherd's Bush was already inside the earlier boundary from October 2021, we make sure any replacement vehicle is ULEZ compliant so you are not paying a daily charge on a car you only have because of someone else's mistake. Injury is handled separately: CityGrip does not deal with personal injury in house, and an injury enquiry is passed to authorised legal partners only with your separate written consent.
The road authority for each route is identified so the right disclosure request (borough council, Transport for London, the City of London Corporation or National Highways) can be filed inside the typical 14 to 31-day CCTV retention window.
| Reference | Road / corridor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A40 | Westway (White City section) | Elevated dual carriageway carried on concrete piers above White City and managed by Transport for London as part of the TfL Road Network, not by the council. Average speed camera enforced in places, with eastbound queues building back from the White City and Wood Lane exit through the morning peak. Recovery from the viaduct has to be coordinated with police and TfL because there is no usable verge. |
| A3220 | West Cross Route | Short north to south dual carriageway between the elevated roundabout at the western end of the Westway and the Holland Park Roundabout, signed as the M41 motorway until 2000 and now a TfL red route. It is also the administrative boundary between Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea, so CCTV and disclosure requests can fall to either borough depending on which side of the carriageway the collision happened. |
| A4020 | Uxbridge Road | Starts at Shepherd's Bush Green and runs west through Shepherd's Bush Market towards Acton and Ealing. A 20mph borough road with bus lanes, frequent stops, constant loading activity and shoppers crossing between parked vehicles, which produces a steady flow of low-speed sideswipe, door-opening and pulling-out claims. |
| A402 | Goldhawk Road and Shepherd's Bush Green (south side) | Runs along the southern side of the Green and continues west as Goldhawk Road towards Stamford Brook and Chiswick. A 20mph borough road, narrow and parked on both sides for much of its length, feeding the Holland Park Roundabout at its eastern end and serving Goldhawk Road and Shepherd's Bush Market stations. |
| A219 | Wood Lane and Shepherd's Bush Road | The north to south spine through White City, passing Westfield London, the former Television Centre and three Underground stations before running beneath the Westway towards Scrubs Lane. It carries Cycleway 34, so lane layouts, cycle priority signals and turning arrangements have changed and older assumptions about right of way at these junctions no longer hold. |
Within ULEZ. Any replacement vehicle we arrange for you in Shepherd's Bush will be ULEZ-compliant so you can continue travelling in and through the zone without penalty.
Hammersmith and Fulham operates a borough-wide 20mph limit. The council extended it onto the classified A roads it manages following a decision in August 2022, so Uxbridge Road (A4020), Goldhawk Road (A402), Shepherd's Bush Road (A219), Wood Lane, Scrubs Lane and every residential street in W12 are 20mph. The exceptions are the roads Transport for London operates: the A40 Westway above White City and the A3220 West Cross Route are outside the borough limit and are signed higher, with average speed camera enforcement in places on the A40. That step down from a fast TfL road to a 20mph shopping street inside a few hundred metres is exactly where speed becomes a live argument in a claim, so always note the signed limit at the precise point of impact rather than the limit that applied where your journey started. Temporary restrictions and timed closures also apply around Loftus Road on matchdays and at school streets off Bloemfontein Road and Ellerslie Road.
CCTV, signal data and bus footage from a Shepherd's Bush collision are subject to retention windows that typically run between 14 and 31 days. After that the footage is overwritten and unavailable. The first 72 hours are disproportionately important.
