Coverage detail
Streatham is in the SW16 postcode district, shared with Norbury (Croydon). The Streatham section of SW16 covers Streatham High Road, Streatham Hill, Streatham Vale, and Streatham Common. The Lambeth/Croydon boundary runs approximately along Norbury Avenue and Beulah Road in the north of SW16.
Streatham is one of south London's longest and most commercially active high streets, with Streatham High Road stretching for nearly two miles from Streatham Hill in the north to Norbury in the south. The road carries the A23 Brighton Road on its entire length through the area, making it one of the most important north-south arterials in south London and one of the few direct road connections between the South Circular and central London south of the Thames.
Streatham Common, the large area of open green space at the southern end of Streatham High Road, is bordered by the Common itself and by the residential roads to the east. The approaches to the common - Streatham Common Northside and Southside - generate local resident and recreational traffic that intersects with the heavy A23 through-flow at the southern junction of the High Road.
The Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre on Streatham High Road, one of the few remaining municipal ice rinks in London, and the Odeon cinema complex nearby generate cluster events at weekends and evenings that significantly increase the pedestrian conflict frequency on the High Road. Ice rink event arrival and departure times create predictable peaks for incidents around the venue access points.
Streatham High Road A23 is 30mph throughout and carries sustained high volumes all day, particularly northbound in the morning peak and southbound in the evening. Bus routes on the A23 include the 50, 109, 133, 249, 250, 255 and more, making Streatham High Road one of the highest bus-frequency roads in south London. The combined effect of bus stop pull-in and pull-out and the volume of northbound commuter traffic generates the highest nearside incident rate in the Lambeth borough.
Streatham Hill to the north provides a direct route to Brixton and the A23/A2 junction at Clapham. The steep northbound gradient on Streatham Hill can affect braking distances on the descent, particularly for vehicles loaded above their typical weight range. The junction of Streatham Hill with Tulse Hill and Christchurch Road is a complex multi-arm junction that is a persistent source of right-turn conflict.
STREATHAM
Section 3 of the walkthrough.
The A23 through Streatham is TfL Road Network with TfL CCTV. Local roads are London Borough of Lambeth. The Croydon/Lambeth boundary in the north of SW16 means that incidents in the northern part of Streatham High Road near Norbury may need verification of which borough's highways team holds the relevant street cameras.
The SW16 postcode's shared Norbury identity means we always verify the exact road location from the postcode sector (SW16 3 vs SW16 4 vs SW16 5) when opening files, as this determines whether the highway authority is Lambeth or Croydon for off-A23 incidents.
The road authority for each route is identified so the right disclosure request (council, Transport for London, or National Highways) can be filed inside the typical 14 to 31-day CCTV retention window.
