Yes - we coordinate non-fault car and van accident management across all IG8, E18 postcode areas within Woodford, part of the London Borough of Redbridge. Services include 24/7 recovery to a CCTV-monitored partner yard, secure storage, repair coordination and like-for-like replacement vehicle screening. We file CCTV disclosure with the relevant highway authority inside the typical 14 to 31-day footage retention window, and we coordinate with the Metropolitan Police for collision reporting under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Coverage detail
Woodford occupies two postcode districts. IG8 carries the post town Woodford Green and covers Woodford Green, Woodford Wells and Woodford Bridge, taking in the High Road, Snakes Lane East and West, Broadmead Road, Chigwell Road and the streets running down towards the River Roding. E18 carries the post town London and covers South Woodford, the part of the town that sits south of the A406 North Circular around George Lane, the High Road and the streets climbing towards Snaresbrook. The North Circular is the effective dividing line between the two halves of the town, so a collision a few hundred metres apart can sit in a different postcode district, a different Redbridge ward and, on the A406 itself, under a completely different highway authority. When you report a non-fault accident to us, give us the nearest junction or building rather than just "Woodford", because that is what determines who holds the camera footage.
Woodford sits about nine and a half miles north-east of Charing Cross in the London Borough of Redbridge, and it is really four places joined together: Woodford Green, Woodford Wells, Woodford Bridge and South Woodford. Woodford Green, Woodford Wells and Woodford Bridge sit in the IG8 postcode district with the post town Woodford Green, while South Woodford sits in E18 with the post town London. What binds them, and what shapes almost every collision here, is that the town is cut in half by the A406 North Circular and pinned on its eastern edge by the point where the M11 motorway begins. Very few outer London suburbs have a motorway terminus, a trunk-standard ring road and a forest-edge A road all inside the same square mile. Woodford does, and the traffic mix reflects it: local residential journeys on quiet Redbridge streets running straight into strategic traffic doing 40 or 50mph on the North Circular.
The road hierarchy changes abruptly. Woodford Green and South Woodford are largely Victorian, Edwardian and interwar suburb, with narrow parking-lined roads, mature street trees, school-run peaks and a genuinely busy pair of local centres at the High Road and George Lane in South Woodford and around Snakes Lane East and the High Road in Woodford Green. West of the town the ground falls away into Epping Forest, and the A104 Woodford New Road runs along that forest edge from Whipps Cross up to Waterworks Corner. East of the town the ground falls away into the Roding valley, where Chigwell Road and Roding Lane North sit low and wet next to the river. Between those two edges sits high, dry, densely built suburb served by the Central line at Woodford and South Woodford stations. Drivers who only know Woodford from the North Circular rarely realise how much local traffic is funnelling on and off it.
For non-fault claims, that geography creates a very particular pattern of work. A large share of what we handle in Woodford involves a driver going about an ordinary local journey who is hit by someone travelling strategically: a driver joining or leaving the A406, a vehicle coming off the M11 at junction 4 still carrying motorway speed into a 40mph limit, or a lane-change on the approach to Charlie Brown's Roundabout. Woodford also has a substantial private hire and PCO population working Uber, Bolt, Addison Lee and local operators, plus a lot of van traffic serving the trades, the Broadmead Road commercial area and the delivery depots east of the Roding. Those drivers lose income the moment the vehicle is off the road, so the priority is not paperwork, it is getting the vehicle recovered, getting a like-for-like replacement moving and getting the repair authorised. CityGrip Accident Claims handles the accident management side of that for car and van drivers, including private hire and PCO drivers. We do not handle personal injury in-house: if you are hurt, we refer that element, only with your separate written consent, to an authorised legal partner.
The dominant feature is the A406 North Circular and the two interchanges that bracket Woodford. At the western edge, Waterworks Corner is a roundabout interchange where the A406 meets the A104 Woodford New Road and the A503, sitting in the forest between Walthamstow and Woodford and operated by Transport for London. At the eastern edge, the Woodford Interchange is a triangle junction where the M11 begins at its junction 4 and feeds into the A406, with the elevated Woodford Roundabout Viaduct carrying that link above the ground-level Charlie Brown's Roundabout below. Signed limits step between 40mph and 50mph through this stretch, sometimes over short distances, which is a recurring theme in disputed liability: one driver expects free-flow speeds, the other is slowing for a local turn. South of the interchange the A406 becomes the South Woodford to Barking Relief Road, a grade-separated route of roughly eight and a half kilometres that runs down past the Redbridge Roundabout and the A12 to the A13 at Beckton. When that road blocks, and it blocks often, traffic reroutes straight through Woodford's residential streets.
Charlie Brown's Roundabout is the single busiest conflict point in the town. It is a ground-level roundabout linking the A1400 Southend Road, the A113 Chigwell Road and restricted-access slip roads to and from the A406 and M11, and it takes its name from the landlord of The Roundabout pub that stood there until it was demolished in 1972 to make room for the enlarged junction and the new motorway slips. The recurring collision types are the ones you would predict from that layout: side-swipes where drivers cross lanes late to reach a slip road, rear-end shunts as traffic that has just left the motorway meets a stationary queue, and failure-to-give-way collisions from drivers unfamiliar with which arm feeds where. The A1400 Southend Road and Woodford Avenue continue south-east from here as a TfL red route towards Gants Hill, and since August 2025 the bus lanes between Keswick Gardens and Clayhall Avenue have run Monday to Friday from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm, after Redbridge Council pushed back on TfL's original 24-hour proposal. Signs and markings were updated on 9 August 2025 and the revised timings took effect on 18 August 2025, so drivers used to the earlier arrangement still misjudge it.
Away from the trunk network, the pattern changes character rather than volume. The A104 runs from Whipps Cross up Woodford New Road along the forest edge, crosses the A406 at Waterworks Corner, and joins the A1199 High Road by the Winston Churchill statue at Woodford Green before continuing north as High Road Woodford Green and then Epping New Road towards Epping. The Epping New Road section is long, straight and 40mph, and average speeds there have been high enough for the highway authority to bring forward a safer roads scheme. The A1199 High Road runs south from the Churchill statue through Woodford Green and South Woodford to Hollybush Hill and Snaresbrook, crossing the North Circular on the way, and it meets the B168 George Lane at the heart of South Woodford's shopping centre. That junction area produces a steady stream of low-speed but expensive incidents: parking manoeuvres, opening doors, buses pulling out, delivery vans double-parked and drivers emerging from side roads with restricted sightlines. Eastwards, the A113 Chigwell Road drops towards Woodford Bridge and the River Roding, where the carriageway is lower, wetter and darker than the rest of the town.
WOODFORD
Section 3 of the walkthrough.
The first practical question in any Woodford claim is who owns the road, because that decides who holds the evidence. The A406 North Circular and the A1400 Southend Road and Woodford Avenue are part of the Transport for London Road Network, so they are red routes and TfL is the highway authority, and TfL is also responsible for operating the traffic signals across the borough. The M11 from junction 4 northwards is a National Highways motorway, so anything on the slip roads or the mainline goes to National Highways and its regional control room rather than to the council. Everything else in Woodford, including the A104 High Road Woodford Green, the A1199 High Road, the A113 Chigwell Road, the B168 George Lane, Snakes Lane, Broadmead Road and every residential street, is maintained by Redbridge Council. Redbridge operates the borough CCTV system and its published position is that recorded material not needed for further legal or civil action is held for a maximum of 31 days before it is automatically overwritten. Across London the practical window is typically 14 to 31 days depending on the operator, and bus, shop, forecourt and private cameras are often at the shorter end. That is why we ask for the location and time on day one, and why waiting for an insurer to get round to it usually means the footage is already gone.
The reporting and logistics side is straightforward once you know how Woodford works. If details were not exchanged at the scene, or if someone was injured, or the other driver was uninsured or drove off, the collision must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Redbridge falls under the Metropolitan Police East Area Basic Command Unit, which also covers Barking and Dagenham and Havering, and the borough's only remaining front counter is at Ilford police station on Ilford High Road, which no longer opens around the clock, so in practice most Woodford reports are made online or by phone and the reference number is what matters to us. On the recovery side, a non-driveable vehicle on the A406, on the M11 slips or on the viaduct approach has to be cleared quickly and to a safe side road, because there is nowhere sensible to stand on a red route or a motorway link. From there we arrange secure storage, an independent engineer inspection, repair coordination with an approved repairer and a like-for-like replacement car or van so you keep working, including private hire and PCO cover where that is what you drive. We correspond with the third party's insurer on your behalf. Redbridge sits inside the London-wide ULEZ, which has covered every London borough since 29 August 2023, so any replacement vehicle needs to be compliant, and if your work takes you south of the river the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels have both been chargeable since the Silvertown Tunnel opened on 7 April 2025. Injury is dealt with separately: we refer it, only on your separate written consent, to an authorised legal partner.
The road authority for each route is identified so the right disclosure request (borough council, Transport for London, the City of London Corporation or National Highways) can be filed inside the typical 14 to 31-day CCTV retention window.
| Reference | Road / corridor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A406 | North Circular Road | TfL red route and the physical divide between IG8 Woodford Green and E18 South Woodford. Runs from Waterworks Corner in the east of Epping Forest to the Woodford Interchange, then turns south as the South Woodford to Barking Relief Road. Limits step between 40mph and 50mph, and CCTV and disclosure requests for anything on this carriageway go to Transport for London, not Redbridge Council. |
| M11 | M11 motorway (junction 4, Woodford Interchange) | The M11 begins here, so junction 4 is where 70mph motorway traffic meets a 40 to 50mph urban ring road within a few hundred metres. The link is carried on the Woodford Roundabout Viaduct above Charlie Brown's Roundabout. National Highways is the authority for the mainline and slip roads, and recovery from a live motorway link has to be arranged as a priority rather than left to a standard call-out. |
| A104 | Woodford New Road, High Road Woodford Green and Epping New Road | Runs along the Epping Forest edge from Whipps Cross, crosses the A406 at Waterworks Corner, meets the A1199 High Road by the Churchill statue and continues north towards Epping. The forest sections are unlit in places with heavy tree cover, and the 40mph Epping New Road stretch north of Woodford Green has been the subject of a safer roads scheme after persistently high average speeds. |
| A113 | Chigwell Road | Runs north-east from Charlie Brown's Roundabout through Woodford Bridge towards Chigwell, meeting Broadmead Road and Snakes Lane East. Historically the low road through the Roding valley, and drainage flooding on Chigwell Road is a recorded local problem. Standing water, a low sun line and a mix of local, commercial and cut-through traffic make this a common site for loss-of-control and rear-end claims. |
| A1400 | Southend Road and Woodford Avenue | TfL red route running south-east from Charlie Brown's Roundabout to the Gants Hill Roundabout on the A12. Bus lanes between Keswick Gardens and Clayhall Avenue now operate Monday to Friday, 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm, after Redbridge Council intervened against TfL's original round-the-clock proposal. Signs changed on 9 August 2025 and the revised hours began on 18 August 2025. |
Within ULEZ. Any replacement vehicle we arrange for you in Woodford will be ULEZ-compliant so you can continue travelling in and through the zone without penalty.
Woodford has an unusually wide spread of limits in a small area. The M11 from junction 4 northwards runs at the national motorway limit. The A406 North Circular through and around Woodford is signed at 40mph and 50mph on different sections, with the limit changing through the Woodford Interchange and around Charlie Brown's Roundabout, and camera enforcement in places, so it is worth reading the signs rather than assuming. The A1400 Southend Road and Woodford Avenue red route is signed for higher-speed through traffic than the surrounding streets. The A104 north of Woodford Green towards Epping is 40mph. The A104 High Road Woodford Green, the A1199 High Road, the A113 Chigwell Road and the B168 George Lane are generally 30mph. Redbridge Council is rolling out a 20mph limit across residential roads borough-wide, delivered in phases as ward-level Road Safety Zones rather than in one go, and the South Woodford Road Safety Zone was consulted on from 27 November to 18 December 2025, covering all roads in the ward between the North Circular and Hermon Hill and Hollybush Hill and the Waltham Forest boundary, with speed humps proposed on Grove Hill, Marlborough Road and Cleveland Road. TfL red routes and the motorway are not part of that 20mph programme.
CCTV, signal data and bus footage from a Woodford collision are subject to retention windows that typically run between 14 and 31 days. After that the footage is overwritten and unavailable. The first 72 hours are disproportionately important.
